Entryway Decor featuring IKEA TRONES

A while back I shared on my Instagram stories a photo of my entryway. It’s nothing fancy, but I received so much positive feedback that I decided to do a post on it and quickly do an IKEA TRONES review since I love these units so much.

As you guys know, I live in a studio apartment. I used to have it arranged totally different (with my bed and IKEA  KALLAX shelves by the door) but I got tired of that arrangement and moved everything around. Instead, I decided to have my apartment open up into my living space (as opposed to my bedroom space). When I used to have my IKEA KALLAX shelves by the door, they served as storage and as a place for me to put my keys. But when I rearranged my furniture, I no longer had a designated spot for my keys or purse and was on the hunt for something to serve this purpose.

It’s no secret that I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE IKEA. Sometimes I go there just to browse and get inspo ideas. For the longest time, the TRONES shoe holders have always been on my wish list. Everytime I went, I’d add them to my cart but then put them back before paying. I finally caved and bought them during my last IKEA trip. I love them so much because they’re affordable, great storage pieces, and they don’t take up much space. In an ideal world I would have used a cute console table as a place to hold keys, shoes, and other storage. But in reality, I knew that whatever storage I kept by my door needed to have a slim profile. I didn’t want any furniture blocking the walkway thus making it feel small and cramped.

Not only do the TRONES units have a slim profile, but they are also mounted on the wall (took me 5 minutes to mount by the way). They are light and not clunky, and because they are mounted and show some wall underneath, they don’t overwhelm the space in my small entryway. These units are plastic, but I don’t mind because it means that I can clean them easily with Clorox wipes.

Above the TRONES shelving I got a gold mirror I was eyeing from Target. I was lusting after it for a while but always felt like $50 was too expensive. I finally caved when my friend convinced me to get it. I was on the phone with her when I saw it on sale at the store and after a lot of back and forth I took the plunge. I’m glad I made the purchase, because it pairs perfectly with my gold VITTSJO coffee table that I DIYed as well as the matching gold VITTSJO shelf next to it. Having a mirror by the door is perfect for last minute lip gloss or hair touch ups before leaving the house. And I think it really opened up the living space and makes it appear a bit bigger than it really is.

In addition to holding my keys, I have one of my favorite candles, a cute gold owl candle holder I found at HomeGoods years ago, and a bouquet of faux flowers on top of the TRONES units. In the inside, I keep my most used shoes, which right now are a bunch of flip flops and my favorite pair of Nikes.

I haven’t really done much decor on the gold bookshelf next to it. After moving my furniture and decor pieces around, I pretty much put the left over decor pieces on the shelf. At some point I’ll take the time to decorate it properly, but for now it holds some frames and candles and the bottom shelf is used to hold my printer. I also tend to use this shelf to hold the purse that I have in rotation at the moment. As you can see in the picture below, I’m back to using my Coach Dinky (aka my favorite purse) as my everyday bag.

Overall, I love this layout. It’s practical, space saving, and it looks great! Although, you guys know me and I can’t leave anything alone without adding my own touch to it. I plan on DIYing the TRONES a bit and staining a light piece of plywood to match my dining table and the rest of the wood pieces in my apartment. The plywood will be placed on top of the TRONES unit to make it a bit more sophisticated looking. Another option is to use marble contact paper (like I did in my bookshelf and coffee table DIY project) instead of staining the wood. I’m kind of over the marble look so I’ll likely go with the stain instead. Although for now I’m feeling kind of lazy and that project is in last place on my list of DIYs so it will probably stay like this for a while.

If you’re interested in getting your own shoe cabinets, IKEA has a bunch of other options for shoe storage. The TRONES is one of the more affordable options and comes in black, white and yellow. I must point out that the white is NOT a pure white. It’s definitely more ivory or what I like to call IKEA white. If you go to IKEA often, you’ll notice that a lot of their white furniture (with the exceptions of metals and high gloss materials) are more ivory than snow white. My TV stand (also from IKEA) and my KALLAX shelves are the same ivory white and matches the TRONES units perfectly. With that being said, I got a desk and laptop table from the VITTSJO series (to match the coffee table and bookshelf) but because they are metal, they are glossy snow white and not ivory white. I plan on spray painting them to match the other gold furniture I DIYed but until then, I don’t really feel like the various whites clash too much. Truthfully, I don’t really think the ivory white vs. pure white is a big deal and honestly depending on your lighting, its probably not really noticeable but I did feel like it was worth mentioning. If you’re really anal about being matchy-matchy you can always spray paint, or just check them out in store to see the color for yourself.

I love my TRONES units and I’m so glad I finally got them. They’re so versatile and you can use them anywhere for low profile storage. They come in a pack of 3 and as you can see I only used 2 of them. I’m considering mounting the last one by my bed to create a floating nightstand but we’ll see.

How do you like my new entryway? In the photo above you can see a sneak peak of my “office space” in the mirror. If you enjoyed this post then I think you’d also like my recent post on how I created my study space and my DIY gallery wall.
